Learn More Our vision is Your Future Our Farmers The LeFevre family started growing tom turkeys for Cooper Farms well over a decade ago, after raising turkeys on their own for many years prior. The LeFevres are one of Cooper Farms’ largest growers, with a total of 12 barns in three different locations, which house the turkeys from five weeks of age to their market age of just under 21 weeks. Learn More Heritage from the Heartland Virgil Cooper started his turkey business back in 1938 with only 300 turkeys, mostly raising and selling them to his friends and neighbors. His business soon grew to include a turkey hatchery located in downtown Oakwood, Ohio. His original hatchery is now the Cooper Community Library, and Cooper Farms’ new hatcheries are located just outside of town. Over the years, Virgil and Virginia’s three children Jim, Dianne and Gary have added much to the Cooper family business. Today the company includes two hatcheries, meat processing plants, egg processing plants, feed mills, and many helping hands raising our turkeys, hogs and chickens on our farms. Biosecurity is a multifaceted program which includes indoor housing, sanitation, strict procedures for entering barns and external animal control. All of our animals are housed indoors. Through the use of temperature controlled barns we can protect our animals from weather, external animals, predators and diseases as well as keep a close watch on their health, and food and water consumption. All of these factors help us to provide the best care and protect our animals from illness. At our breeding farms, our team members take full showers and change their clothing in order or enter or exit the farms; this prevents all external bacteria carried by the humans from entering the barns, thereby keeping the parent stock healthy. At our growout farms, boots and coveralls are worn at all times and disinfectant foot baths and hand wash are utilized. Cleaning the barns themselves is also a top priority and is completed regularly, based upon the animals and their age. All farms use a variety of rodent control methods and work to prevent the presence of wild birds.
